ALPACAS!! ALPACAS!! ALPACAS!!
What an adventure and a joy they have brought to our
lives. As empty-nesters, baby-boomers and still too
young to be "ole' Grandma and Grandpa", we found the
prospect of breeding, owning and raising alpacas to be
ideal. It sure is keeping us young - or at least too busy to
grow old.
After our sons were off to college we bought 5 acres and
it took a few years to fix up the house, rebuild the barn
and install fence before we were ready for livestock on
our place. We had some laying hens; but they are too
easy, cows are cool; but you just raise 'em and butcher
'em, horses are beautiful; but upkeep and time
consideration was more than we were ready to take on.
Having a bit of that "free spirit" attitude of the 70's, we
wanted something unique but economically promising.
I came across "alpacas" in my research and finally made a
call to AOBA, they sent me their packet of information
and I FELL IN LOVE WITH ALPACAS!!! My next hurdle
was to convince my husband that the dollars we would
be spending would be worth the investment in the long
run. I actually put together a proposal, just like I would
for a banker, and presented it to him one evening. Much
to my surprise, he was okay with the idea and thus, our
adventure began.
We started 3 years ago with two bred females; our first
girl delivered her male cria before we brought her home.
Since then we have purchased a few other females,
welcomed five new crias to the farm and now have a herd
of 14 It has been a rewarding experience and I know we
have much yet to discover. Be a part of the alpaca
community you will find it amazing how we work
together for education, networking and setting goals,
both individually and as an industry.
Our only regret?--that we didn't get into the business
years ago!!!
We encourage you to consider the many possibilities of
raising alpacas--start NOW; researching, asking
questions, visiting farms. Start by looking through the
